Anchor of sanity

Life can make us crazy. Like a vomit inducing tilt-a-wheel ride without a brake, we can feel trapped on a mad carnival ride…circling our way faster and faster until our world seems to implode. We go “crazy” as we find ourselves thrust into an insane, spinning, flash of frantic emotion. We have to be careful. Our over-heated lives can burn us out ….leaving us cooked, a charred and smoking ember of who we once were.

Living a stressed out life for too long can leave us painfully stretched out and broken inside… like a rubber band that snaps under too much pressure we can become as limp and lifeless, all our stretchy-ness gone.

As families of faith, we are not immune to frenetic life moments. We will find ourselves dealing with the same pressures and circumstances everyone else does… the difference maker for a Christian parent is in our ability to gain a better “perspective” of the crazy life we live.

I have to remind myself that as a Christian… I have an anchor. I a tether to reality, a connection to real truth in the midst of a blizzard of emotional half-truths and fearful factoids that try to strangle our lives and choke out hope. It’s the truth of who I’m connected to that keeps my mind from imploding when everyone and everything around me seems to be spinning out of control.

Our personal strength comes not in our faith or resolve to “do better” or pray more…but in our being connected to an un-movable, un-changing reality. Our faith is fed by our connection to the fierce love and faithfulness that Jesus Christ gives and gives and gives… to us. An intimate chain forged by God’s faithfulness that keeps us strong and secure in any life storm.

Hebrews 6:17-19a  (ESV) – Biblegateway.com

17 “So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,”

Parents… my encouragement is to stay the course, hang in there. God is not playing a game with us, He’s not tempting and testing and trying to see where we’ll trip up. He’s in our  corner, rooting for us every second of every day and He’s made himself completely available for the life  moments when we can’t make sense of anything or anyone but Him.

He’s our anchor, our hope and our certainty in an insane world. Cling to that today.

Love you all, Pastor B.
