Risk the Reset

Time to “reset”… 2013 is now history as 2014 has arrived all shiny & brand new.

Wish our hearts worked like that. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just wipe away all past mistakes and regrets… clean off all the grime from last years disappointments and start over with a fresh – clean surface.

That would be awesome!

We wouldn’t have to live 2014 with sullen- bitter regrets over our past choices, we would look at the future with bright innocent eyes of youth, full of optimism. We could long to see what would be “next” for us in the year ahead, we could laugh again and live with our minds renewed and our hearts undimmed by life’s pain.

But should we trust an uncertain future with our oh-so-fragile and oft broken hearts ?

Can we trust our hearts to another year of failed relationships and lost dreams?

Probably not, it must be wiser and easier to just patch in the cracks of our broken hearts with some extra toughness. We can take a bit of past-disappointment and blend it in with some future anxiety and carefully construct new walls of isolation to seal off our painful places from further harm. What would be worth the risk of living with any hopeful expectations in 2014?

So year after year… we just build higher – stronger walls to keep the painful things out and allow the feeble flame that feeds our hearts to sputter and slip away. We slowly die inside as the glowing ember of hope for something different… waits for someday to come.

My encouragement to you… to me, to all of us… time to break the funk.

Risk the RESET.

Pull back for a day or two in early January 2014. Ask for a clean heart. A new heart. Lay down the old and painful parts and ask for Jesus to heal the wounds once and for all. Ask Him to come and speak to the pain and the pressure that builds and builds and never seems to fade inside. But be intentional, take the time to be alone… turn off the stuff that distracts us and listen for a still – small – quiet presence to whisper and gently inquire of us.

Listen as He asks… “Do you want to be whole again ?” Oh YES we reply… we do. Please Lord, show us how in 2014.

Parents, Pastors and friends…. it’s time to live from a whole-heart. It’s time to walk without resentment and anger and unresolved fear. Our lives are meant to be cleaned and fresh again… innocent and new and full of hope and excitement.

Jesus promised true life when He came the first time… He offers it to any and all who will risk to trust and begin again. His promise today is to Exceed our expectations !

Ephesians 3: 14-21 (Message) “that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. (Biblegateway.com)

Let’s look forward into 2014 with renewed optimism for God to surprise us with some really good things, and to relieve us of all those really bad things so we can really come alive!

Happy New Year from RTP!
